چکیده

This paper describes a PC-based controller for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The development is motivated by the need of reducing the exposure of operating room personnel to X-rays during surgical procedures such as percu-taneous discectomy. The approach taken consists of upgrading the hardware architecture and the control software of a clean-room PUMA 260 manipulator, and by developing a new vision-based operator interface. The original PUMA controller is interfaced to a PC for trajectory generation and force/torque data acquisition. Kinematic and communication functions are ported to the PC from the RCCL package. The operator interface is used for robot calibration and motion commands. In this implementation, position control and force/torque data acquisition are executed every 28 ms, thus preserving the original robot performance. Preliminary tests have shown the validity of this approach and readiness of the system for more realistic experiments in the operating room.

Robot Simulation and Monitoring on Real Controllers (RoboSiM)

The rapid evolution of standard hardware such as workstations and PCs made it possible to develop workstation or PC based robot controls. RoboSiM, a robot simulation and monitoring system, is based on such a robot control. RoboSiM runs on the real robot controller which may be either a SPARC workstation or a PC. Traditional systems simulate both, the robot arm and the robot control. The basic i...

PC - based Workstation for Global PACS Remote Consultation and Diagnosis in Rural Clinics

Most rural clinics across the country have limited facilities to provide state-of-the-art medical services. The availability of enabling technologies, such as telecommunication networks, multimedia workstations, and telemedicine systems which provide medical services to patients without requiring them to travel from their cities represents a great step in patient care. In previous work, we have...

Trends in Distributed and Cooperative Database Management

PC/workstation DBMS provide a set of data management functions in a stand-alone fashion as a single-user system on a personal computer or workstation. There is no real data exchange between a PC/workstation DBMS and other data management systems, remote users, or DBMS at another place. Some PC/workstation DBMS provide limited functions to extract data as a "snapshot" from a remote database to p...

Design and implementation of a teleautonomous hummer

Autonomous and semi-autonomous full-sized ground vehicles are becoming increasingly important, particularly in military applications. Here we describe the instrumentation of one such vehicle, a 4-wheel drive Hummer, for autonomous robotic operation. Actuators for steering, brake, and throttle have been implemented on a commercially available Hummer. Control is provided by on-board and remote co...

Many frameworks and packages exist for the development of robotic surgical systems. An important aspect of such packages involves the communication interfaces between various robotic devices. This paper discusses one such framework, the Surgical Assistant Workstation (SAW) developed at the Johns Hopkins University. SAW is a component-based framework, providing interfaces for the hardware and so...
